“I’ll never forget the moment I walked into the office to find three of my employees fist fighting in the restroom!”
After I got over my initial shock, apologized to the other tenants in the building, and responded to the unpleasant voicemails from the landlord who had been called multiple times, I sent the entire department home so I could think about my next steps.
At the time my team was made up of a dozen people, of which 8 were hired as lead generators to find deals for my real estate investment company. Marketing was the lifeblood of my business and I knew I had a very serious issue on my hands because without new opportunities coming in my business was halted. So what was I to do?!
At the suggestion of a trusted friend I chose to outsource my entire marketing team. This initially led to more frustrations and new challenges; however, I knew if I could find a way to perfect the model it would be a vast improvement. Finding the very best talent, establishing standard operating procedures, communicating effectively, and holding people accountable were just a few of the challenges we faced given that our new marketing department was global and now relied heavily on technology in a way we never had before.
Although we still had problems they were less frequent and less severe. In my book that was a HUGE win! After 9 months of refining our processes we had a system that actually worked. And honestly, it worked well!
By the time we hit the 1 year mark friends in the real estate industry were frequently coming to me asking for guidance and seeking done-for-you services.
Now, we have a team of over 100 people which includes a complete human resources (HR) department with full-time hiring managers whose only job is to place employment ads, interview and onboard new hires, a training department and quality assurance team. We have found that identifying, attracting, hiring, training, and managing the very best talent IS possible. It’s certainly not easy, but with strong systems in place and few key people to help, we have managed to totally redesign our teams and help other entrepreneurs in the process. The success of this model is all based on “the numbers,” or the Key Performance Indicators.
